Rainier Store Moving Poster

When Art Oberto and his mom bought a building at 1715 Rainier Avenue in 1953 to house their small local sausage business, no one could have imagined that the company would grow to employ more than 900 people and that the Rainier structure would become a Seattle landmark.

The building on Rainier remained our headquarters and production plant until 1978.  Since that time, our Rainier location has been a storefront offering local patrons Seattle’s finest meat snacks and has served as a nice reminder to residents and visitors of a bygone time.

While many generations of meat snack lovers came and went over the years, one very special neighbor moved next door in 2015. The Hamlin Robinson School was created to ignite the academic and creative potential of students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. As their enrollment has flourished over the years, they are excited to begin construction of a new middle school with an expanded learning center on the site of the current Oberto storefront.

“The Hamlin Robinson School builds on the value my grandparents, Art and Dorothy Oberto, placed on education,” said Stephen Oberto. “They believed that all kids can have success in the future through the opportunity of quality early learning.  While this transition comes with mixed emotions, I am confident that the Hamlin Robinson School will add tremendous value to the community of Seattle.”

On March 21st, the transition of our iconic Rainier location towards local children’s education will begin with the closure of our store. For children with dyslexia, this is a great day. For fans of Oberto, you can still find your favorite meat snacks at nearly every local grocery and convenience store, online or just down the street at our Renton store, near Ikea.

In addition to making great products, of course, Oberto will continue to be entrenched in the local community through our extensive partnerships with the Seahawks, Mariners, Seafair, Seattle Children’s Hospital and by continuing to expand our business right here in the city we love. Lastly, we are proud to continue our local legacy of crafting Washington’s finest meat snacks just down the road in Kent, a place we have called home since 1998.
